Amalfi Coast
We chose to spend an additional two days in Rome, because who knows when we will able to come back! After a few negotiations we finally agreed to a day trip to the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii. The weather was HOT and the tour was a whirlwind, but to anyone thinking of visiting these sites- I say go for it! I had recently watched a Rick Steves episode on the Amalfi coast and I couldn't wait to go! I made it my goal to find the lemons that were as big as my hand and to buy some Limoncello! Mission accomplished! The Limoncello was a hit at my welcome back party. Thanks for the advice Rick!
Pompeii
Pompeii was yet another piece of history I didn't think I'd ever see. I loved Pompeii and would add it to the "do not miss" list in the tourbooks! I think what struck me the most was the size of the city! I guess I was expecting a few little roads or buildings, but that was not the case. It was incredible to see the artifacts so well preserved. The roads had chariot tracks worn into them! The remains of the houses still had colorful paintings on the walls. The city has been restored enough that they have been able to identiful bakeries, houses, and baths among others. They are still working on uncovering Pompeii today and we were able to observe archaeology stuents at work. The only disappointment for me was the cafe thats been opened right in the middle of this ancient city.
